Job Description

Chester, South Carolina is located just off Interstate 77 between Charlotte, NC and the state capital in Columbia. Chester County serves a diverse population of almost 33,000 people. The Main Library is located in the center of the city of Chester, while the Lewisville Community Library is located in the small but growing Richburg community and the Great Falls Community Library is located in the small town of Great Falls near the Catawba River. The Chester County library is an active member in the SCLENDS consortium sending books throughout the State to other member libraries. The Chester County Library is seeking a talented and enthusiastic individual who is interested in making a difference in a small public library. The Children and Youth Services Librarian will provide professional library assistance and services to children and youth (0-17), and their parents and caregivers. The duties cover a wide range of subjects and require various levels of complexity.

• Plans and conducts weekly children’s programming at the Main Library and the two branches • Develop and coordinate system-wide children’s programming for initiatives such as the Summer Reading Program • Plan, promote, and implement innovative programs that meet the needs and interests of youth in the community • Produce and edit content for website and social media including writing reviews of children’s books and marketing children’s programs in an online environment • Update collection development plan and weed and maintain children’s collection at the Main library and at the branches in conjunction with Branch Managers • Act as outreach liaison to preschools and community organizations, coordinating regular visits and tours • Actively participate in development of long-term department goals • Cooperate as a professional staff member with library staff in performing essential library duties and participate in library special projects as needed or requested by the Library Director. Assist at Circulation Desk as a reference librarian who provides professional assistance to library patrons. • Receive and respond to the public and answer information requests • Attend workshops, conferences, and training to develop skills that will enable children’s services to engage the community.

This position starts at $37,000, per year, depending on experience. Benefits include: paid leave, retirement, health care benefits and opportunities for professional development.

Qualifications

• Masters in Library Science (MLS/MLIS degree) from an ALA-accredited library school and experience working with children and the general public. New graduates are encouraged to apply. • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, be dependable, and complete tasks on schedule • Exhibit creativity, initiative, and passion about developing library services that benefit children and youth. • Demonstrate a strong work ethic, excellent customer service skills, and flexibility • Possess solid organizational and communication skills (specifically writing and reading) • Be able to prioritize work and pay attention to detail • Have an extensive knowledge and enjoyment of children and teen literature • Be energetic and enthusiastic with a positive attitude and be willing to do whatever the job requires • Genuinely enjoy a diverse youth population and interact with the public in a positive and constructive manner • A working knowledge of computer applications for library services • Be comfortable and proficient using current technology (specifically Microsoft Office, Internet, social networking, and video game systems), and display knowledge of or interest in emerging technologies • Must be able to pass the required pre-employment physical and background check • Must be able to lift 30 pounds • Must hold a valid driver’s license • Flexible schedule including working evenings and weekends
