The Reference and Instruction Librarian position is a supervisory public service position. This position is a partnership position to support academic library services with the University of South Carolina in Union. This employee works under the supervision of and consults with the Assistant Director. They have broad decision making responsibilities for routine operational matters and some decision making responsibilities for nonroutine matters, including applying library policy to problems as necessary. The Reference and Instruction Librarian acts as manager on duty when the Library Director and Assistant Director are out of the office.
Primary Responsibilities:
Serves as a representative of the library while at work and out in the community; acts as official library liaison for various committees and meetings
Provides reference, readers’ advisory, and research assistance for university students
Plans and conducts instructional programs for adults, with a focus on college students, under the guidance of the Assistant Director
Maintains a programming budget, keeping a record of all expenditures, including contracts and other receipts, and provides statistical reports to immediate supervisor
Develops and implements improvements to library programs and services in coordination with library administration, based on community needs
Able to perform all of the duties of Library Clerks and Assistants when needed to keep the Library running smoothly o Including but not limited to: helping patrons locate materials, placing and processing holds and ICLs checking in and out materials, handling financial transactions, and providing computer assistance to patrons
o Substitutes for absent library employees as required
Responsible for cash drawer and preparing cash deposits
Oversees volunteer workforce and handles training, scheduling and evaluation of volunteers
Assists in the selection and acquisition of materials
Helps with cataloging and processing new materials
Operates, maintains, and assists patrons in using library equipment and technology
Supports technology initiatives, including STEAM programs and accessibility initiatives
Assists with library special projects, including identifying, applying for and managing grants and managing project-related staff
Assists with additional future library services, such as public notary and passport applications
Contributes to the current and future success of the library through planning and communication
Attends workshops and conferences relating to primary job functions
Drives library vehicle as necessary
Other duties as needed or assigned by supervisor or Library Director
Position requires availability to work some nights and weekends
Salary: $30-34,000 annually; Union County Library System provides health benefits, paid leave, and retirement to all full time regular employees. Additional benefits, such as a relocation stipend, may be available.

Two years prior customer service experience
One year experience in an academic setting
Masters in Library Science
Ability to use technology easily and effectively
Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license
Prior experience providing programs or instruction preferred
Strong attention to detail; ability to maintain accurate records and statistics and complete reports
Ability to lift and sufficient flexibility to shelve books and materials repeatedly on all shelves
Previous grant writing experience preferred
Knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques of modern library operations
Strong oral and written communication skills
