Dr. Curtis Rogers discusses the new University of South Carolina Press book They Stole Him Out of Jail: Willie Earle, South Carolina’s Last Lynching Victimby Dr. William B. Gravely. Dr. Gravely is Professor Emeritus of Religion at the University of Denver and is a graduate of Wofford College, Drew University, and Duke University where he received his PhD in 1969. He recorded the recollections of journalists, law enforcement officers, attorneys, clergy, and relatives of Willie Earle, who was lynched on February 17, 1947. The recordings and other primary documents are available online at the William Gravely Oral History Collection at the University of South Carolina Libraries Digital Collections website.
