GREENVILLE COUNTY (SC) LIBRARY SYSTEM

Position: Cataloging/Processing Supervisor,  Technical Services, Hughes Main Library    Pay: $49,977 per year, plus benefits
Status: Regular Full-time, Exempt    Available: August 2024
Location: Hughes Main Library, 25 Heritage Green Place, Greenville, South Carolina
Schedule:  Mon. – Fri. 8:30a-5:00p. Works 37.5 hours per week

FUNCTION
Under supervision of the Technical Services Manager, this position:
•    Is responsible for the supervision and effective operation of the Cataloging and Processing Sections of Technical Services. 
•    Performs work related to quality control of records entered into national and local bibliographic databases and original cataloging.
•     Performs work in accord with the Library System’s vision and mission, using good judgment in the application of policies and established procedures. 

MINIMUM TRAINING & EXPERIENCE
•    Master in Library & Information Science (MLIS) degree from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited college or university
•    Three (3) years of cataloging experience and at least one (1) year of supervisory experience
•    Experience using library computer systems and applications, online databases, office software and email. 
•    Certified or eligible for certification by the South Carolina State Library. 
•    Other combinations of experience and training, which meet the minimum requirements, may be substituted.

•    Develops and implements approved plans and policies for the Cataloging and Processing Sections; develops and maintains documentation for established policies and procedures. (E)
•    Supervises cataloging and processing staff; assigns, instructs, schedules, and audits work of subordinates for accuracy. (E)
•    Reviews performance of subordinates and makes recommendations for improvement/growth as appropriate. (E)
•    Provides training to cataloging staff in areas of national standards for cataloging and classification, application of local policies within the framework of national standards, use of standards-related tools, searching strategy on national and local databases, etc. (E)
•    Participates in the interviewing of applicants for Cataloging and Processing positions and makes recommendations for selecting new employees. (E)
•    Responsible for quality control of the Library System’s catalog, including resolution of problems relating to use of appropriate MARC formats for bibliographic records. (E)
•    Provides assistance to staff responsible for INFORM & INNEWS databases in areas of national standards for cataloging, including resolution of problems relating to use of appropriate MARC formats for bibliographic records. (E)
•    Responsible for implementation and maintenance of authority control system. (E)
•    Supervises and participates in the editing and cataloging of newly acquired materials to ensure timely delivery of items to public service units of the Library System. (E)
•    Performs original cataloging and classification of library materials, using Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, Dewey Decimal Classification System, Library of Congress Subject Headings, and OCLC manuals to determine proper coding and formatting for entry of each type of record on the national database. (E)
•    Ensures processing staff are trained in procedures and accepted methods for data entry, physical processing of library materials, labeling of items, repairing library materials (including limited archival repairs), and creating and maintaining various reports. (E)
•    Monitors cataloging expenses and provides annual budget estimates for processing supplies and ensures adequate levels of processing supplies are available at all times. (E)
•    Identifies and evaluates new supplies and vendors for packaging and repairing the various formats of materials included in the Library System’s collection.
•    Supervises the bar coding and labeling of materials and the addition of item-specific information in the Library System’s bibliographic database.
•    Maintains a smooth flow of materials through Cataloging and Processing to avoid backlogs.
•    Operates Technical Services equipment, provides instructions, and demonstrates use as needed. (E)
•    Oversees operation of the disc cleaning machine.
•    Keeps supervisor informed of events and activities of the Cataloging and Processing Sections.
•    Ensures that safe work methods are followed to prevent injury. (E)
•    Maintains regular and reliable attendance and remains compliant with the Library System’s Attendance Guidelines. (E)
•    Performs other related duties as required, including those of any staff member in the unit.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS/ABILITIES & CHARACTERISTICS
(Testing of computer skills may be part of the interview process for this position.) 
Knowledge:
•    Thorough knowledge of modern library principles. 
•    Knowledgeable in supervisory methods and techniques.
•    Knowledge of business English, spelling, and arithmetic. 
•    Knowledge of various Library of Congress MARC formats and their application. 
•    Knowledge of AACR2 rules for descriptive cataloging. 
•    Knowledge of authority control. Knowledge of library classification systems theory and practice. Knowledge of the operation and services of bibliographic utilities.  
•    Knowledge of contemporary functions of Technical Services and of interactions with other library units and outside organizations. 
•    Thorough knowledge of bibliographic utilities. Thorough knowledge of database creation and maintenance. 
•    General knowledge of current trends in industries and governments producing and distributing library materials and services.
•    In-depth knowledge of library computer systems and applications, online databases, office software and email.

•    Ability to learn moderately complex computer applications.  
•    Ability to analyze professional and administrative problems and suggest practical solutions. 
•    Ability to supervise and provide adequate instruction and directions to subordinates.

•    Ability to communicate concepts, general information, and task-oriented information in oral, written, and electronic forms. 
•    Ability to maintain confidentiality and to use good judgment and discretion in carrying out duties and responsibilities.
•    Ability to be punctual, work hours as scheduled, and maintain a good attendance record.
