GREENVILLE COUNTY (SC) LIBRARY SYSTEM

Position: Information Services Manager, Information Services, Hughes Main Library    Pay: $54,097 per year, plus benefits
Status: Regular Full-time, Exempt    Available: July 2024
Location: Hughes Main Library, 25 Heritage Green Place, Greenville, South Carolina
Schedule: Daytime hours Monday – Friday, with occasional evening and weekend hours as needed. Schedule requires flexibility to cover unanticipated staffing needs. 

FUNCTION
Under the supervision of the Access and Discovery Director, the person in this position:
•    Is responsible for assigning, instructing, directing and supervising the activities related to the operation of the South Carolina Room, Reference, and Technology Center areas at the Main Library, as well as the Library System’s Interlibrary Loan service.
•    Is responsible for some collection management, reference service, adult programming and instruction, and readers’ advisory service system-wide. 
•    Embodies the Library System’s code of service by creating an atmosphere where customers and employees feel invited, informed, impressed and inspired.
•    Greets customers and employees with a welcoming smile, and enthusiastically provides knowledgeable and meaningful assistance. 
•    Performs work under general supervision, in accord with the Library System’s vision and mission, using good judgment in the application of policies and established procedures. 

MINIMUM TRAINING & EXPERIENCE
Required:
•    Master’s Degree in Library Science from an A.L.A. accredited college or university, or a Master’s Degree in History, Public History, Archival Studies, or related field from an accredited college or university.
•    Four years of professional library experience at a supervisory or leadership level, including considerable experience in reference services.
•    Demonstrably progressive work experience showing an increase in the level of duties and responsibilities.
•    Other combinations of experience and training, which meet the minimum requirements, may be substituted.
Preferred:
•    Supervisory or leadership experience in a public library.

•    Provides training and /or support for subordinates; reviews performance of subordinates and makes recommendations for improvement/growth as appropriate. (E)
•    Assists in future planning, including budget recommendations, formulation of goals and objectives, and the preparation of selected grant proposals related to the activities of the units supervised (E).
•    Recommends resources for the reference and South Carolina Room collections at the Main Library. (E)
•    Oversees administration of system-wide readers’ advisory services as well as reference and one-on-one instructional services.
•    Serves on the Materials Committee and/or other committees as assigned. (E)
•    Works with unit staff and the Technical Services Manager in evaluating, maintaining, and making recommendations for adult non-fiction collections. (E) 
•    Works with HR Training Coordinator and Branch Library Services Manager to develop and implement training to enhance reference and readers’ advisory skills for Information Services and branch library staff. (E)
•    Works with HR Training Coordinator to develop and implement training on technology competencies for Information Services staff. (E)
•    Provides training and /or support for subordinates; reviews performance of subordinates and makes recommendations for improvement/growth as appropriate. (E)
•    Assigns, instructs, directs and supervises staff. (E)
•    Prepares and/or reviews staff schedules, approves leave requests, and arranges supplemental coverage when needed. (E)
•    Participates in the interviewing and selection of new employees within areas of responsibility. (E) 
•    Confers with the Access and Discovery Director and Human Resources regarding unit personnel needs, problems, vacancies, recruitment, specific position requirements and overall employee relations. (E)
•    Addresses personnel issues and administers disciplinary actions and/or provides guidance to subordinate supervisors regarding personnel matters. (E)
•    Communicates and enforces the Library System’s Code of Conduct and other policies, procedures and rules to customers and employees. (E)
•    Serves at a public service point providing direct service to patrons on a regular basis. (E)
•    Assists customers with current mobile device technology and assists them in downloading and/or accessing the Library’s online digital materials such as eBooks. (E)
•    Operates and cares for equipment, including computers, printers, copiers, microform readers and printers, and assistive technology; provides instruction and demonstrations as needed.
•    Demonstrates use of library materials in all formats and software to staff, patrons and others as required.
•    Establishes relationships with organizations and groups in the community to promote Library System services and resources and to provide outreach programs when appropriate. (E)
•    Works with the Adult Events & Outreach Manager to direct unit staff in the planning, scheduling, and implementation of programs for adults at the Main Library.
•    Assists the Access and Discovery Director as needed, participates in special projects, and serves as a member of various committees. (E)
•    Serves as Acting Access & Discovery Director when the Branch Library Services Manager is not available. (E)
•    Ensures that safety and maintenance issues are reported promptly and properly. (E)
•    Coordinates maintenance requirements for the unit.
•    Receives and compiles statistics, reports, correspondence, etc. (E)
•    Reviews and studies professional literature to keep abreast of developments in library and information science. (E)
•    Works with the Volunteer Coordinator to train, schedule, and supervise volunteers in the unit as appropriate. (E)
•    Attends library meetings, training programs, workshops, and conferences as appropriate or as requested by supervisor. (E)
•    Ensures safe work methods are followed to prevent injury. (E)
•    Works a schedule that meets the needs of the unit. (E)
•    Maintains regular and reliable attendance and remains compliant with the Library System’s Attendance Guidelines. (E)
•    Performs other related duties as required, including those of any staff member in the unit.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS/ABILITIES & CHARACTERISTICS
(Testing of computer skills may be part of the interview process for this position.)
Knowledge:
•    Thorough knowledge of modern library principles and major fields of learning.
•    Thorough knowledge of reference sources; of reference practices and techniques, including reference service delivered via telephone, email, online chat, and one-on-one appointments. 
•    Thorough knowledge of reader interests and readers’ advisory sources.
•    Knowledge of legal research, local government information, genealogical research, and interlibrary loan practices and procedures.
•    Knowledge of supervisory methods and techniques.
•    In-depth knowledge of library computer systems and applications, online databases, office software, and email.
•    Knowledge of technology and mobile devices.
•    Knowledge of business English, spelling, and arithmetic. 

Skills/Abilities:
•    Ability to recommend and assist in the development of content for training initiatives for staff on reference service, readers’ advisory service, interlibrary loan, technology competencies, collection development and maintenance, and adult events and outreach.
•    Ability to operate and care for computers and their peripherals, e.g. RFID pads, barcode readers, printers, etc. 
•    Ability to learn the Library System’s integrated system software, i.e. an automation system used to manage library processes.
•    Ability to demonstrate to customers the use of the Library System’s website, including the online catalog and databases.
•    Ability to learn and demonstrate the use of current mobile device technology to assist customers in downloading and/or accessing the Library System’s online digital materials, such as eBooks, audiobooks, music, and videos.
•    Ability to plan, organize, and direct Library System activities. 
•    Ability to learn and enforce the Library System’s policies, procedures, and regulations to customers and employees. 
•    Ability to maintain confidentiality of customer records and other identifiable customer uses of Library System resources and services, security-related incidents, and personnel issues.
•    Ability to learn and enforce Federal and State laws pertaining to employment.
•    Ability to supervise and direct the work of others and provide coaching, training, and disciplinary actions as needed.
•    Ability to effectively exercise discretion, independent judgment, and critical thinking to resolve staff, patron, and operational problems within established guidelines.
•    Ability to deal with difficult individuals in unusual situations with tact and diplomacy.
•    Ability to communicate concepts, general information, and task-related information in oral, written, and electronic forms. 
•    Effective reference interview skills.
•    Ability to learn, implement, and maintain complex filing systems, including the Dewey Decimal System, with a high level of accuracy.   
•    Preferred: Bilingual – English/Spanish skills.
•    Preferred: Touch typing skills.
