Position: Librarian II, Collection Development, Technical Services/Collection Development, Hughes Main Library Pay: $47,916 per year, plus benefits
Status: Regular Full-time, Exempt Available: November 2024
Location: Hughes Main Library, 25 Heritage Green Place, Greenville, South Carolina
Schedule: Daytime hours Monday – Friday. Works 37.5 hours per week.
FUNCTION
Under the supervision of the Collection Development Supervisor, this position:
• Performs professional library work of a specialized nature relating to collection development system-wide.
• May direct, assign, and coordinate duties of other staff to ensure quality and timely management of collections.
• Ensures that library policies and procedures are practiced and that the library has a high-quality collection of materials and online resources available for its patrons.
• Performs work in accord with the Library System’s vision and mission, using good judgment in the application of policies and established procedures.
MINIMUM TRAINING & EXPERIENCE
• Master’s Degree in Library & Information Science (MLIS) from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited college or university with coursework emphasizing public library reference and research.
• Two years of collection development and maintenance experience.
• Certified or eligible for certification by the South Carolina State Library.
• Other combinations of experience and training that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must have the ability to:
• concentrate for long periods of time

• see and interpret all job-related materials
• operate library equipment as assigned
• lift up to 55 pounds and push book carts weighing over 100 pounds
• sit for long periods of time

• type on an ongoing basis for long periods of time, using both hands
• tolerate low levels of dust and mold associated with working around paper files, books, and other library materials
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
• Use of personal vehicle with mileage reimbursement
• Valid S.C. driver’s license
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

• Evaluates and selects materials for the adult collection as assigned. (E)
• Participates in the Collection Development Committee and other committees as needed. (E)
• Accesses patron request information and compiles selection lists. (E)
• Assists in the evaluation of materials that are patron requests for addition to the collection, requests for reconsideration, or that otherwise require reevaluation. (E)
• Selects and orders leased books, including preparing books for return to vendor and arranging for shipment, and deciding what titles to add to the permanent collection. (E)
• Provides training for staff in the area of collection maintenance. (E)
• Develops and maintains documentation for established procedures related to collection development and maintenance. (E)
• Assists in planning for improvements in collection development. (E)
• Demonstrates knowledge of computer applications and participates in planning and administration of automation at the unit level. (E)
• Travels to branches to conduct on-site coordination of collection management in collaboration with Branch Library Services Manager. (E)
• Acts as a team leader at branches for collection maintenance projects.
• Answers questions on library operations, policies and procedures and handles problems and complaints.
• Reviews professional literature to keep abreast of developments in library and information science, with an emphasis on developments in collection management. (E)
• Prepares, processes, and/or transmits correspondence, acquisitions requests, collection statistics, copy distribution forms, reports, etc. (E)
• Participates in special projects as requested.
• Attends library association meetings, training programs, workshops, and conferences as appropriate.
• Ensures safe work methods are followed to prevent injury. (E)
• Maintains regular and reliable attendance and remains compliant with the Library System’s Attendance Guidelines. (E)
• Performs other related duties as required, including those of any staff member in the unit.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS/ABILITIES & CHARACTERISTICS
(Testing of computer skills may be part of the interview process for this position.)
Knowledge:
• Considerable knowledge of the functions of collection development and maintenance, including general knowledge of the major fields of learning.
• General knowledge of publisher and vendor practices and methods and of reader interest levels.
• Good personal computing skills, including effective use of word processing and spreadsheet programs, various Internet browsers and email.
Skills/Abilities:
• Ability to learn moderately complex computer applications.
• Ability to work in a team environment and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with library staff.
• Detail-oriented and the ability to recognize and correct errors.
• Strong organizational skills.
• Ability to create and maintain clear procedural documentation.
• Ability to work under frequently stressful conditions, meet required deadlines and follow established procedures.
• Ability to communicate concepts, general information, and task-oriented information in oral, written, and electronic forms.
• Ability to use good judgment and discretion in carrying out duties and responsibilities.
• Ability to interpret and analyze technical and statistical information and reports.
• Ability to be punctual, work hours as scheduled, and maintain a good attendance record.
• Preferred: Bilingual – English/Spanish skills.
• Preferred: Touch typing skills.
