Freedom Now: Columbia, South Carolina and the Modern Civil Rights Movement

Protestors crowded downtown Columbia streets at the height of the civil rights movement. Several places along Main Street played a pivotal role in the fight for equal rights. To commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the peak of the movent, Columbia partnered with six southern cities and created Columbia 63 SC.  The goal is to tell the stories of those who fought for democracy and social justice. From Febrauary 8 to March 29, the State Library will host a collection of photos from the Columbia 63 SC collection that documents protests from 1961 to 1963. We invite the public to view the photos and let us know if they recognize any of the people in them.  We also need help determining the dates that some of the photos were taken.  This is part of the effort to document Columbia's history and prove that our story matters.
