Laurens County Library Summer Reading Program a Success

The Laurens County Library had a very successful summer children’s series with several special guests.  The theme was Get a Clue @ Your Library.

The Friends of the Laurens County Library funded special guest appearances.  Programs, held at both the Clinton and Laurens libraries, included the weekly story times for infants ages birth through five and the summer reading club for children in the first through sixth grades.

Michael P. White at Laurens County LibraryMichael P. White, illustrator of the books The Library Dragon, Harriet’s Horrible Hair Day, and The Secret of Old Zeb showed children how to draw with each child having their own paper and pencil to try out their own abilities.  Mr. White gave each library a set of six of his own illustrations to be framed and displayed.

Magician Greg Zelnik of Charlotte appeared as Detective Zelnik and got the youngsters to give him “clues” to find his missing dog.  South Carolina humorist and illusionist Tim Sonefelt let the young library patrons help find clues in books.  Ronald McDonald made a surprise appearance.

The series ended with Bob Linsenmayer, the singing storyteller who performed with his guitar, who engrossed the children with his stories and music.

An average of 275 children attended the programs each week at the two Laurens County library locations.  Pam Bennett, Coordinator of Children’s Services, and Emily Pitt, Children’s Assistant, planned the summer series.
