South Carolina Foundation Directory Now Available for Purchase

Print copies of the South Carolina Foundation Directory 2006, 8th edition, are now available for purchase from the South Carolina State Library for $15 each (plus $3 shipping for mail orders). For ordering information visit the Grant and Funding Sources page. The complete Directory is also available for viewing or free downloading.

The latest edition of the Foundation Directory profiles 357 active South Carolina private and community foundations and grant-making public charities. According to the most recent information, 9,013 grants were paid totaling more than $88 million. South Carolina has 139 foundations with assets greater than $1 million. The Drs. Bruce & Lee Foundation of Florence is the largest foundation with assets of over $156 million. Other foundations with substantial assets and giving are the Mary Black Foundation, the Spartanburg County Foundation, the Carolina Community Foundation, the Abney Foundation, and the Self Family Foundation.

The South Carolina Foundation Directory is designed to be a starting point for grant seekers in their search for funds to support nonprofit organizations' programs and projects. Information in the directory is based on the foundation's most recent federal income tax returns. In some cases additional information was taken from annual reports or newsletters.

Each foundation entry includes the name, address, telephone number, officers, program interests, assets, dollar amount of grants awarded, sample grants, geographic interests, employee identification number (EIN), and, when available, application and giving restrictions.

The State Library also maintains a large number of grants-related titles in its Grants Research Collection. While most of these guides to funding sources are for in-library use only, previous editions of these reference works and a large number of guides to fundraising and grant proposal writing are available for loan through every public library in the state. The Anderson County Library, Charleston County Library, Spartanburg County Library, and the Greenville County Library also maintain special collections of grants-related directories and guides.
