South Carolina Library Association Seeks Awards Nominations

The SCLA Awards Committee invites nominations for the Outstanding Librarian Award, Jane Walter Mason Award for Excellence in Technical Services, and Friend of Libraries Award to be presented at the SCLA annual conference, October 28-30, 2009.

scla conference logoThe purpose of the Outstanding Librarian Award is to recognize and honor a South Carolina librarian who has initiated or developed an imaginative or creative program, service, or work of enduring value, for the effective use of or increased interest in libraries or a particular library. Such contributions may include excellence in leadership, significant professional writing, instrumental role in building programs, promotion of the profession through teaching or influence, etc.

Criteria:
1. The recipient must be in active service and a member of the South Carolina Library Association.
2. The award will be presented to a person titled "librarian" as defined by the Awards Committee and the SCLA Executive Board.
3. The award will recognize contributions made within the five years preceding January 1 of the award year.
4. The award will be given to a person who has served in any type of library--academic, public, school, or special.
5. Nominations must be made in writing to the Chairperson of the Awards Committee. Nomination form is available at http://www.scla.org/uploads/AwardsCommittee/2009outstandinglibrariannomform.pdf.
6. The deadline for nominations is September 29, 2009.

The Friend of Libraries Award recognizes outstanding service to a library or libraries. This service should be that which has furthered the expansion of library services in South Carolina. The award may be given to a person or to an organization deemed to be a "friend" to any type of library--academic, public, school, or special--or to the library profession.

Service on which the award is based must have occurred within five years preceding January 1 of the award year. The contribution made by the person or organization may include, but not be limited to, financial benevolence. Jane Walter Mason Award of Excellence in Technical Services

The Technical Services Section of SCLA is also accepting nominations for the Jane Walter Mason Award of Excellence in Technical Services to be presented at the SCLA annual conference. The honoree will receive a plaque and $100 check from Lyrasis. The purpose of the award is to recognize and honor a librarian or library staff member who through the course of the year has made contributions to help improve technical services in the United States, South Carolina, and/or their own technical services department. Such contributions may include organizing, planning, and/or hosting workshops, providing leadership to the technical service or South Carolina library community, contributing to technical services resources, improving standards or practices, promoting technical services through teaching or influence, etc. The former multi-year Chair of Technical Services Section, Jane Walter Mason, felt it was important to promote improvement of skills in technical services. She was active in many organizations where her contributions help further technical services. The Technical Services Section wishes to recognize others that seek to improve technical services whether it is at a national level, statewide, local, or even individual level.

Criteria:

• The recipient must be a member of the South Carolina Library Association.
• The recipient must have completed actions and/or accomplishments that served to improve technical services for staff and/or librarians in the United States, South Carolina, and/or your library's technical services department.
• The award may be recognition for contributions made within previous five years of the award year.
• The award is open to people who have worked in any type of library--academic, public, school, or special.
• Nominations must be made in writing to the Chairperson of the Technical Services Committee. Nomination forms may be obtained from the SCLA website.
• The deadline for nominations is September 10, 2009.
