South Carolina Literary Map Book Series Available to Public Libraries

South Carolina Literary Map: Women of Carolina is a Let’s Talk About It: Reading and Discussion series available to statewide public libraries. Let’s Talk About It, a joint program of The Humanities Council SC and the South Carolina State Library, gives funding to public libraries to host scholar-led book discussion groups.

“South Carolina Literary Map: Women of Carolina” is the newest of the 36 series available through the Let’s Talk About It program. The series features five of the Palmetto State’s most famous female writers, from Pulitzer-Prize winner Julia Peterkin to national bestseller Sue Monk Kidd. The full series list is: Scarlet Sister Mary, by Julia Peterkin; The World Is Round, by Nikky Finney; The Secret Life of Bees, by Sue Monk Kidd; Bastard Out of Carolina, by Dorothy Allison; and Clover, by Dori Sanders.

“South Carolina Literary Map: Women of Carolina” has been enthusiastically received by libraries since its debut in the fall of 2006. Gary Brightwell of the Colleton County Public Library said, “[Women of Carolina] was our most successful LTAI ever, and we are anxious for similar series. The South Carolina tie-in helped to make the series extra engaging.

Through the Let’s Talk About It program, participating libraries receive a $500 grant to pay for scholar honorarium and are loaned a complete set of the books in the series, up to 30 copies per volume.

“South Carolina Literary Map: Women of Carolina” is available to two libraries in the fall of 2007. To receive this or another Let’s Talk About It series, libraries must complete an easy two-page application available on The Humanities Council SC Web site: www.schumanities.org. For more information about the program, please contact the Literary Arts Partnership Coordinator at 803-771-2477.
