State Library Announces Two New Digital Collections

The South Carolina State Library is pleased to announce the creation of two new digital collections at the South Carolina Digital Library (scmemory.org).

South Carolina Children's Library Services Collection presents 40 historical and contemporary images from the 1940s-2000s relating to library services for children. Taken by South Carolina State Library field agents, the photographs portray youth at public libraries, summer reading programs, other children's programs, and displays.

South Carolina State Library Construction Collection presents a 25 images of the construction of the State Library building from 1969-1970. The photographs are from the archives of the South Carolina State Library, documenting the construction of the building at 1500 Senate Street in Columbia. In 1969, the State Library Board was redesignated as the South Carolina State Library and assumed responsibility for public library development, library service for state institutions, service for the blind and physically handicapped and library service to state government agencies. The State Library building was financed with state and federal funds and dedicated on February 18, 1970.

Both collections may be viewed online at statelibrary.sc.gov/digital-collection. They will also be searchable through the Digital Public Library of America at dp.la.

Kim Henderson, University of South Carolina Bachelor of Science Information Science intern, scanned the photographs and created the metadata for each item as part of her spring internship with the State Library.
