The Friends of the Laurens County Library invites everyone to their annual meeting on Sunday, May 3, at the Laurens Library.  The program will be James Dickey: Poet and Teacher, with Dr. Ward Briggs.  A South Carolina legend, James Dickey played football at Clemson and taught at the University of South Carolina where he was writer-in-residence.  He was a national poet laureate and winner of the National Book Award in poetry, as well as the author of several novels, including Deliverance.  For four decades, until his death in 1997, Dickey was one of the nation’s most important and active writers of poetry and prose.

Dr. Briggs is the editor of The Complete Poems of James Dickey.  He is a Carolina Distinguished Professor Emeritus and was a longtime friend of Dickey.  Dr. Briggs will talk about Dickey’s poetry and other works, and will also provide insight into his life and outsized personality.

In addition to the program, this is a chance to learn more about how the Friends of the Library support the mission of the Library through volunteerism and funding.
