Author B.J. Welborn to Speak at SC Center for the Book

The South Carolina Center for the Book will host author B.J. Welborn for a lunchtime program on Thursday, June 28th, 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. Welborn, author of Traveling Literary America and America’s Best Historic Sites: 101 Terrific Places to Take the Family, will speak on “Traveling Literary America: Taking a Twain Ride, Pursuing Peripatetic Poe, Hunting Hemingway Hideaways.” The event will take place at the South Carolina Center for the Book, located at the South Carolina State Library at 1430 Senate Street, Columbia.

B.J. Welborn is a self-described “cultural patriot” who “finds writing about America’s important historic, literary, and cultural sites a mission as well as a fascinating good time.” Welborn’s 25 year career as a journalist, publicist, and author has included work on the staffs of several publications, including The Charlotte Observer, The State, and The Acton (Mass.) Digest, a magazine she helped establish.

While researching her book Traveling Literary America, Welborn crisscrossed America numerous times in search of the places where writers lived, loved, and wrote. Her program on “Traveling Literary America” is a lively mix of descriptions of these literary sites, stories about authors, and her personal observations on making travel interesting and fun.

B.J. Welborn will speak at the free lunchtime program on June 28th at the SC Center for the Book though the sponsorship of The Humanities Council SC, a state program of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Attendees at the program are invited to bring a bag lunch to enjoy. Drinks will be provided.

The South Carolina Center for the Book is the South Carolina affiliate of the Library of Congress Center for the Book in Washington, DC and is a cooperative project of the South Carolina State Library, the USC School of Library and Information Science, and The Humanities CouncilSC. Formerly known as the Palmetto Book Alliance, the SC Center for the Book changed its name in 2006 to align with the 49 other Centers for the Book across the country. The Center’s mission is to celebrate South Carolina’s rich literary heritage and bring public attention to the importance of books, writers, and reading.
