Talking Book Services Summer Reading Program

Children who have vision or physical disabilities will celebrate the end of the state’s “Get A Clue” summer reading program with a party at 11 a.m. Friday, July 27, in Columbia.

A total of 15 children and family members from across South Carolina will visit the South Carolina State Library at 1430 Senate St. The children will receive a medal and certification of achievement from the Talking Book Services program. Jeff Flanders from the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department will share stories and songs, McGruff the Crime Dog will make an appearance and Balloon artist Stacy Davis of Columbia also will be on hand to create balloon animals for the children.

“Get A Clue” is a collaborative summer library program for South Carolina and over 40 states. Public libraries planned summer activities for children of all ages to encourage them to read and enjoy books over the summer. The program was customized for participants in Talking Book Services, administered through the South Carolina State Library.

Talking Book Services is administered and funded by the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, the Library of Congress and the South Carolina State Library.

The program is open to people who are unable to read or use standard printed materials because of blindness, low vision, missing arms or hands, lack of muscle coordination, prolonged weakness, or physically based reading disabilities, such as dyslexia. An application with disability certification is required to take part.

The Summer Reading Program is supported in whole or in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services and administered by participating state library agencies.
