State Library Recognized by United Way

On Wednesday, September 9, the South Carolina State Library was recognized as a United Way 2009-2010 Kickoff Superstar. Fifty-four Kickoff Superstars were recognized at the 2009-2010 Campaign Kickoff and of these, only four represented state government agencies. According to David Goble, State Library director, "It was a thrilling event. We were recognized as a Pace Setter organization for initiating our campaign before the kickoff and because we increased our giving by more than 11%."

united way logoThe mission of United Way of the Midlands is to unite people and resources to improve the quality of life in the Midlands. The United Way of the Midlands works to determine and respond to the critical human service needs of the community, and this work is achieved by a four-part process: determining community needs, prioritizing community needs, developing community resources, and distributing community resources. Goble continued, "This is a time of great need in our community and the United Way is an excellent way to help."

According to the United Way of the Midlands website, "Community stewards in four targeted care councils develop and review a community-wide needs assessment to determine key issues in the community. Once the issues are prioritized, these volunteers then determine which organizations can best provide direct services to allocate funding. Funds are raised through a workplace campaign, grant writing and private, individual donations.

The South Carolina State Library is an active supporter of community organizations such as the United Way. For more information about the United Way of the Midlands, visit www.uway.org and for more information about the South Carolina State Library, visit www.statelibrary.sc.gov.
