State Library Announces Collection Development Mini Conference

The State Library is pleased to announce the 2011 Collection Development Mini Conference to be held at the South Carolina State Museum, September 12-14.

Join the South Carolina State Library for three days of in-depth discussion, learning, and discovery about collection development practices. Nationally known speakers and knowledgeable panelists will provide the best in current thinking, policy, selection, tools and techniques to help you provide the right materials for public library audiences of all ages.

Monday, September 12, will start at the SC State Museum, 301 Gervais Street from 12:30-4:30 p.m. with a focus on E-Books and Their Impact on Library Services. The day will lead off with a presentation by Deb Czarnik of the Lee County (FL) Public Library and discussion panel of South Carolina's own Library Directors and Collection Development specialists. We welcome those who attended the day's events to an evening vendor reception at the South Carolina State Library, 1500 Senate Street in Columbia to begin at 5:30 p.m.

The second day, Tuesday, September 13, focuses on Selecting Adult Materials for Today's Public Library. The first full day, 9:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m., will feature Mary Kelly and Holly Hibner, both public librarians in Michigan. Together they have published and presented on topics such as computer instruction, reader's advisory, providing tech support, and collection quality. They are the co-authors of the popular blog Awful Library Books and the book Making a Collection Count: a Holistic Approach to Library Collection Management. The day will also offer an opportunity for discussion and information exchange focused on materials for adults.

The final day, Wednesday, September 14, will center on Selecting Books and Materials for Youth and Young Adults. The final day runs from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and features Pat Scales, former ALSC President and Youth/YA consultant as the lead speaker as well as discussion and information exchanged focused on materials for youth and young adults.

This is a great opportunity to explore all the aspects of Collection Development. We encourage all Library Directors, librarians and staff who work in collection development, and adult and children's public service staff to attend.

The $15 per day registration fee includes lunch and refreshments each day. Register for all three days at a discounted rate of $40.00.
