Job Description

SALARY: $66,944.71

Cumberland County Public Library is seeking a dynamic, innovative, and flexible leader to serve as the system’s Deputy Director. The Deputy Director will work with library leadership in directing, setting standards for, and enhancing the activities and services within the library system. This position oversees the library’s public services with an emphasis on ensuring excellent services and effective policies and procedures along with being responsible for implementing innovative methods for organizational development to ensure the library meets its strategic goals. The Deputy Director serves as the library’s Department Head in the absence of the Director.

Ensures dynamic and responsive public services by directly supervising all library location managers and ensuring the efficient and effective delivery of services to customers

Assists in the oversight of personnel, policy, and procedure activities in the system. Participates in discussions regarding serious disciplinary actions with the Director and the library’s Human Resources Manager and makes recommendations as appropriate. Assists in supervisor training, the creation and presentation of training modules as needed

Consults with and makes recommendations and decisions with the Director, library leadership team and others on library practices, procedures, policies, and operations

Actively participates on the Library Leadership Team and other councils and teams as assigned or needed

Coordinates all statistical gathering procedures for the library system, including, but not limited to regular reports, annual surveys, the mandatory annual State Library Survey and other surveys as needed and assigned

Ensures that library security is maintained through procedure and training. Provides hearings for barred customers. Coordinates with library leadership and library team members to evaluate and implement security procedures to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for all customers.

Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master’s degree in Library Science and five (5) years of professional public librarian experience to include supervision with all levels of library staff, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  

Management Preferences

Management experience in a Public Library setting. Grant-related project experience.
