Position: Digital Preservation Specialist, Discovery/South Carolina Room, Hughes Main Library Pay: $43,797 per year, plus benefits
Status: Regular Full-time, Exempt
Available: December 2022
Location: Hughes Main Library, 25 Heritage Green Place, Greenville, South Carolina.
Schedule: Monday – Friday, 9:00a-5:30p. After training period complete, incumbent may work 8:30a-5:00p, if an earlier start time is desired.
Reporting to the South Carolina Room Supervisor, this position:
• Coordinates efforts to preserve the Library System’s digital collections, including both born-digital and digitized content such as electronic records, digital objects (text, image, audiovisual), and datasets.
• Assesses the state of the South Carolina Room’s digital preservation activities; helps identify collection development and/or preservation priorities; and assists with the development of policies, procedures, workflows, and strategies for sustainable digital preservation and access practices.
• Performs work under general supervision, in accord with the Library System’s vision and mission, using good judgment in the application of policies and established procedures.

• Coordinates projects related to preservation of the Library System’s digital collections. (E)
• Oversees the digital preservation features of the collection management software system for the discovery, management, and preservation of the Library System’s digital collections. (E)
• Creates, manages, and updates metadata for items and objects in multiple formats. (E)
• Performs rights evaluation on items selected for digitization and keeps up-to-date on the latest information regarding intellectual property, copyright, and rights management. (E)
• Assists with the development and implementation of policies, standards, and procedures for the management of digital content, including, but not limited to, content on current or legacy physical media (e.g., hard drives, floppy disks, CDs), born-digital materials, and web-based materials. (E)
• Manages cloud and site-based backup systems for the digital collections, collaborating with staff from the Library System’s Information Technology (IT) Department, as needed. (E)
• Ensures extensibility and compatibility of digital collections for long-term accessibility. (E)
• Provides leadership and expertise in digital archiving and electronic records management.
• Assists the Digitization Librarian with the conversion of analog and audiovisual materials to digital formats and with the online delivery of digitized content.
• Works to incorporate finding aids into the collection management system to make archival materials such as vertical files and archive boxes more discoverable and accessible.
• Assists with acquisition, processing, arrangement, description, and preservation of born digital materials and hybrid collections.
• Reviews and studies professional literature to keep abreast of developments in library and information science, with an emphasis on developments in digital preservation. (E)
• Conducts outreach presentations and workshops regarding the Library System’s digital collections and related topics.
• Establishes relationships with organizations and groups in the community to promote Library System services and programs, and participates in community events on behalf of the Library System upon request.
• Plans, organizes, and implements online exhibits and programs for adults, including those that promote Library System resources in assigned subject areas. (E)
• Works with Volunteer Coordinator and South Carolina Room Supervisor to train, schedule, and supervise volunteers in the SC Room as appropriate.
• Develops content for Library System web pages and publications. (E)
• Prepares, processes, and/or transmits, correspondence, acquisitions request forms, time sheets, reference statistics sheets, cataloging corrections forms, reports, etc. (E)
• Attends library association meetings, training programs, workshops, and conferences as appropriate.
• Ensures safe work methods are followed to prevent injury. (E)
• Performs other related duties as required, including those of any staff member in the unit.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS/ABILITIES & CHARACTERISTICS
(Testing of computer skills may be part of the interview process for this position.)
• Demonstrated knowledge of digital archives as well as current and emerging digital curation practices.
• In-depth knowledge of preservation and digitization standards such as OAIS, PREMIS, and NDSA Levels of Digital Preservation.
• Familiarity with digital forensic tools used to ensure authentic and appropriately protected archival materials.
• Familiarity with trends in arrangement, description, and management of born-digital materials.
• Knowledge of copyright, donor restrictions, and permissions issues related to processing digitized and born-digital materials.
• Knowledge of current digitization and preservation reformatting practices.
• Ability to safely handle fragile, brittle archival materials.
• Ability to read and decipher historic handwriting.
• Ability to analyze administrative problems and suggest practical solutions.
• Ability to create and work in a team environment and establish and maintain effective working relationships with Library System staff and the general public.
• Ability to foster and maintain effective working relationships with community organizations and area business representatives.
• Ability to work under frequently stressful conditions and meet required deadlines.

• Ability to effectively use computer equipment, Windows operating system, MS Office, various Internet browsers, email and the Library System’s website; including the online catalog and databases.
• Ability to learn emerging technologies and moderately complex computer applications.
• Ability to communicate concepts, general information, and task-oriented information in oral, written, and electronic forms.
• Ability to plan and execute presentations and demonstrations of Library System resources for various audiences.

MINIMUM TRAINING & EXPERIENCE
• Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited college or university; or a graduate degree in Archival Studies, Archives Administration, Records Management, Digital Archives, or related field from an accredited college or university.
• Two years’ experience in a library, museum, archives, special collections, or records repository.
• Experience working with digital preservation.
• Other combinations of experience and training that meet the minimum requirements.
• Experience with disk imaging, digital forensics tools, and/or digital preservation management software such as Archivematica, Bitcurator, Preservica, Archive-It, or similar software.
• Experience with collections management systems such as ArchivesSpace, CollectiveAccess, or similar tools.
• Experience using a digital asset management (DAM) system.
• Experience with metadata standards relevant to archival control of digital collection materials such as Dublin Core, MODS, METS, and PREMIS.
• Experience with tools, workflow implementation, and quality assurance for digital archives
• Experience working with archival collections and conducting research in a digital environment.
• Experience coordinating or conducting presentations related to digital collections or archival collection materials.
• Experience with programming/scripting languages such as Python, Ruby, XSLT, XML, and/or other high-level / object-oriented programming languages.
• SAA Digital Archives Specialist certificate.
