Job Description

The Marion County Library System and its Board of Trustees are currently seeking an experienced, forward thinking, strategic leader as its next Library Director. The perfect candidate will not only be responsible for overall operations of the library system, but will also champion the next phase of growth through an up and coming, highly anticipated renovation and expansion of its Marion branch, a stunning 1905 Carnegie Library that serves as the heart of the community.  

Nestled in the beautiful, predominantly rural northeastern area of South Carolina, Marion County boasts small town southern charm, all within an hours drive to Myrtle Beach and a two hours drive to picturesque Charleston, South Carolina. The library system provides services to Marion County’s 30,000 residents via 3 branches, 2 satellite branches, and a Bookmobile.

Marion County Library System operates under a governing Board of Trustees, and reports to the South Carolina State Library, and the Marion County Council, and other agencies that may be required. Comprehensive experience working with small local governments is highly desired.  

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsible for all aspects of library operations, including budget forecasting and preparation, Human Resources, 

Provides forward thinking leadership to library staff inline with organization's mission

Acts as an integral component of the construction process, overseeing the facility expansion project

Hires, trains, and motivates all library personnel

Oversight of library’s technology platforms

Community engagement on behalf of the library

Implementation of policies and the ability to uphold the principles of intellectual freedom to ensure free, equitable, and confidential access to information for all people of the community.

COMPENSATION:

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

Must have an MLIS from an ALA accredited program

Preferably 5 years of increasingly responsible leadership and management experience  in a library, with at least 3 of those years consisting of budgeting, planning, and supervising staff. 

Excellent written and oral communication skills

Familiarity with current and future library technology and trends

SC driver’s license (or obtained within 6 months if out of state)

Must pass a pre-employment drug test

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Long term management expertise

Public relations experience

Fundraising and grant writing knowledge

Familiarity with Government Accounting Best Practices

Proficiency in Quickbooks Online or similar software
