This role is responsible for leading a team to provide excellent patron services, manage collections, plan engaging programs, and support the community’s information needs. The ideal candidate will be well organized, able to use independent judgement, and have in-depth knowledge of library operations, personnel management, and program oversight.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

Responsible for supervising the professional staff who are the heads of public service departments and the Head of the Technical Services department, including but not limited to, training, evaluation and conducting of performance reviews and counseling, including making recommendations for hiring, promotion, merit pay increases, disciplinary action, and terminations that are given particular weight by the Library Director.
Serves as Liaison to the Friends of the Anderson Library System. Attends meetings and makes funding requests.
Provides oversight for library programming system wide.
Serves in lieu of branch manager for Main branch.
Works with the Director to assist with division of collection development funds when they are released for purchase of library materials.
Selects materials for the general collection in assigned areas.
Performs supervisory related duties such as opening and closing procedures for the Main Library, securing money, setting alarms, and ensuring safety and security. Back-up responder to alerts from security monitoring service.
Performs duties and responsibilities of Library Director in the absence of the Library Director.
May be required to act as liaison between the Library Director and Department Heads under his/her direct supervision.
Plans, prepares agenda, and presides over regular Department Head Meetings or other meetings in absence of the Director or at the direction of the Director. May lead or facilitate standing or special committees.
Compiles, tabulates, analyzes and reports statistical information.
Undertakes special projects on behalf of Library Director.
Assists patrons by:
Answering directional and procedural inquiries.
Advising patrons concerning the library and its services, resources and policies.
Giving instruction in the use of the on-line catalog, and location of materials.
Instructing in the operation of equipment.
Answering reference and other information requests.
Answering incoming calls; provides guidance and assistance, routes calls to appropriate personnel or department; takes messages.
Maintains professional development through various workshops, literature, and other means; consults and shares information with co-workers and other library staff.
Able to assist in changes of daily work schedule due to unexpected public demands.
May be required to work nights and weekends.
May fill in other positions within the Library System.
Performs other related duties as required.
Salary Range - $65,000-$75,000
Master’s degree in library science from an American Library Association accredited university.
Minimum of five (5) years of previous library supervisory experience in at least two library departments.
Knowledge of standard library functions, practices and procedures, with an emphasis on local policies and procedures; ability to plan and organize workloads; ability to set priorities; ability to interpret the library’s resources and services to the community; ability to adjust to changes in the daily work schedule; ability to handle multiple projects at the same time.
Excellent research and computer skills along with a demonstrated ability to perform detailed and precise work.
Ability to effectively supervise staff; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, employees, branch managers and system personnel, and county and other agency officials; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; ability to work in a team environment as well as independent work.
Ability to evaluate staff performance and design solutions to perceived needs; ability to effectively supervise staff; ability to mentor staff to improve performance.
Must possess a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain one.
