Job Description

JOB SUMMARY:

The Electronic Resources and Access Librarian promotes and supports learning through providing leadership for all aspects of discovery and access services for electronic and print resources. The librarian maintains current and correct bibliographic records for all resources through cataloging and deaccessioning and ensures the proper functioning of the SLSP. Additionally, this role supports student and faculty research by managing document delivery and interlibrary loan.

The Learning Commons includes the Library, Career and Student Success Services (including advising and accessibility services), Pearce Communication Center, tutoring, and the Honors Program as integrated services to support student learning. It also serves as the lab for individual and collaborative learning for students, faculty, and staff, including developing programming on topics of current regional, world, or professional interest.

The position reports to the Director of Edens Library while working collaboratively with other members of the Library and Learning Commons faculty and staff. This is a twelve-month, non-tenured faculty position.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Electronic Resources (40%):

-Conducts needs analyses to identify databases and other digital resources appropriate to support learning congruent with the curriculum and the mission of Columbia College.
-Manages purchasing and renewal invoices.
-Develops and maintains relationships with vendors.
-Provides outreach, support, collaboration, and training to Librarians, other Learning Commons faculty and staff, faculty and students about databases for use in their areas, important changes in interfaces or functionality, and specialized use or curricular integration.
-Engages in robust assessment of needs and of effectiveness of electronic resource training opportunities to measure the impact of training and of the availability of resources on student learning.
-Collects and compiles usage statistics on a monthly schedule.
-Troubleshoots and reports issues; manages authentication and linkage with discovery tools, such as Primo VE and Open Athens.
-Maintains LibGuides pages, such as A to Z listing, and provide administrative support for SpringShare applications.
-Drafts policies and procedures relevant to electronic resources use; maintains current knowledge of licensing agreements.

Cataloging and Technical Services (10%):

-Administers all aspects of the Partnership Among South Carolina Academic Libraries (PASCAL) shared library services platform (currently Alma/Primo VE).
-Maintains strong working relationships with PASCAL staff and colleagues in the consortium. Monitors information from PASCAL, participate in webinars and other educational activities.
-Supports the Learning Commons and Circulation Coordinator in understanding circulation processes.
-Runs reports and compiles statistics as requested and as needed for IPEDS and ACRL surveys.
-Catalogs all materials. Provides leadership for weeding and deaccession materials. Maintains accurate bibliographic records and shelflist, including for discrete collections.
-Maintains the collection management and other relevant policies and procedures.

Reference and Subject Liaison (15%):

-Serves as subject liaison for one or more divisions, departments, or programs. Subject liaison support includes developing relationships with the faculty and students, learning the curriculum, providing information literacy and research support, and participating in collection development and management.
-Provides in-person and virtual reference service to students, faculty, and staff.
-Maintains and creates LibGuides.
-Works at least one night per week and participates in the weekend rotation, providing responsibility for the Learning Commons.

Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery (10%):

-Manages all interlibrary loan and document delivery processes for borrowing and lending.
Involves student employees in pulling materials, processing for shipping and receiving, and checking in as appropriate or other communication with patrons about availability.
-Works closely with PASCAL staff, including for peer-to-peer lending, and with EAST as a supporting partner.

Additional responsibilities (25%):

-Serves on campus committees and task forces as assigned.
-Engages in service to the profession.
-Engages in professional development through various means, such as:
-Attending and presenting at local, state and/or regional conferences, workshops, webinars, etc. as budget permits.
-Staying current on professional literature and webinars.
-Conducting research for program development and presenting results.
-Participates in community life and activities of Columbia College.
-Performs other duties as assigned, within the general scope of the position description.

Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:

-Master’s Degree from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited Master’s program (MLS/MLIS).
-1-3 years of experience in a similar role, preferably in higher education.
-Expertise in current cataloging and metadata practices and administration of SLSP systems.
-Demonstrated ability to organize and maintain correct details of large amounts of information.
-Enthusiasm for the learning culture of liberal arts institutions and for the mission of Columbia College.
-Demonstrated experience providing collaborative leadership.
-Evidence of effective organizational skills and attention to detail.
-Competence with business math and written and verbal communication suitable in a business or professional setting.
-Skill in the use of Microsoft Office Suite, utilizing Outlook, Word, Excel and Microsoft Teams, or related software.
-Marketing or promotional experience preferred, including graphic design or social media.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Requires sedentary work that involves walking, standing, lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a recurring basis or routine keyboard operations.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work environment risks exposure to no known environmental hazards.
