Library department - administration - Collection Management and Acquistions
Responsible for cataloging and processing all formats of library materials. Catalogs books and audio-visual materials; interprets and applies library standards to classify materials for the library’s collection. Prepares materials for branch collection, maintains authority records, imports and purges MARC records, and updates records in system databases. Coordinates cataloging and processing services and workflow. Supervises staff within work area in absence of Collection Management and Acquisitions Coordinator. Serves on collection development committees.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
•Responsible for cataloging all formats of library materials; books, audio-visual materials, serials, and eBooks. Accesses various databases such as Library of Congress and Online Computer Library Center. Verifies classification numbers and subject headings for items. Creates bibliographic records in library database. Updates and modifies item records to ensure compatibility with library database. Interprets and applies authority records to complete cataloging of materials. Utilizes experience and other resources to create bibliographic record of items that are not in standard database.
•Manages the workflow of the cataloging and processing team and establishes priorities. Advises team on cataloging standards and implements updates and changes. Receives and resolves cataloging concerns from team and branches.
•Assists with acquisitions for Library System. Manages orders, renewals, statistical reporting, and invoicing for periodicals. ?Communicates claims to vendor for missing, duplicate, and/or damaged materials and follows up with branch contacts. Communicates subscription issues and changes to branches as needed. Evaluates order carts to determine branch allocations and accuracy of data before purchase.
•Maintains authority file of approved subject headings, classification numbers, and bibliographic information. Interprets cataloging and classification standards to staff.
•Evaluates materials for acquisition. Manages weeding and replacement of materials as needed. Serves the library system by sitting on or chairing collection-focused committees. Evaluates professional book reviews, statistics, and reports related to collection management in the selection/deselection of materials. Runs reports to assist in selection/deselection decisions in keeping with collection development policy and working within an established budget.
•Creates and reviews various documents, including but not limited to cataloging worksheets, budget documents, financial reports, purchase orders, and various other reports, memos, and correspondence.
•Serves as Manager on Duty and assigns tasks to other staff members as needed; coaches and mentors subordinates and colleagues. Assists in the interviewing and training process for department staff. May interview, train, and supervise volunteers and interns as needed. Assists in establishing and implementing policies, procedures and goals for assigned branch and for own department. Coordinates ordering of necessary supplies and equipment. Serves the library on professional committees.
•Attends professional meetings, conferences, and workshops to maintain knowledge of current theories and trends in public library operations and technology.
Minimum Education - ALA accredited MLIS/MLS with 3 - 5 years of experience in a library setting
Minimum Qualification - Valid SC Driver's License
