Position: Youth Services Manager, Youth Services, Hughes Main Library
Pay: $70,580 per year, plus benefits
Status: Regular Full-time, Exempt
Available: May 2025
Location: Hughes Main Library, 25 Heritage Green Place, Greenville, South Carolina
Schedule: Daytime hours Monday – Friday, with occasional evening and weekend hours as needed. Schedule requires flexibility to cover unanticipated staffing needs.
FUNCTION
Under the supervision of the Executive Director, this position:
• Is responsible for the administration, supervision, and effective operation of Youth Services at 12 branch libraries, plus outreach locations, which includes service to children and teens from birth through age 17.
• Oversees the delivery of a consistently excellent level of customer experience.
• Maintains a positive work environment that attracts, retains, and develops high quality personnel who are collaborative, innovative, and inclusive.
• Embodies the Library System’s code of service by creating an atmosphere where customers and employees feel invited, informed, impressed and inspired.
• Performs work in accord with the Library System’s vision and mission, using good judgment and ethical behavior in the application of policies and established procedures.

• Serves as a member of the Library System’s management team to formulate and implement organizational goals, objectives, and policies. (E)
• Monitors current trends, and anticipates future customer needs, in order to provide the best possible resources and services to the community. (E)
• Provides training and/or support for subordinates; reviews performance of subordinates and makes recommendations for improvement/growth as appropriate. (E)
• Plans, coordinates, supervises, and may participate in programming for children, teens, parents and other adults, including special events both inside and outside the Library System. (E)
• Assists in the planning and coordinating of publicity and special promotions for Youth Services; provides content for booklets, bibliographies, and brochures as they relate to Youth Services. (E)
• Works with Branch Managers, Communications Manager, Adult Event and Outreach Manager and others as needed to develop occasional system-wide thematic programming. (E)
• Reviews all Youth Services program information for accuracy, including confirming time/date and content, in all publicity and public information items. (E)
• Oversees online Calendar of Events information for youth programs. (E)
• Oversees maintenance of Library System’s Children and Teens website information. (E)
• Works with Communications Unit to determine the news and events for children and teens to be featured in the Event Guide, slides, and on website.
• Reviews, evaluates and responds to program proposals from outside sources. (E)
• Prepares budget estimates for Youth Services and for selected grant proposals. (E)
• Oversees and monitors spending related to the Youth Services budget lines. (E)
• Identifies and responds to needs and requests from the public for library programming for children and teens. (E)
• Represents the Library System in developing and maintaining partnerships and other collaborative relationships with community groups and cultural organizations that offer programs for children and teens. (E)
• Selects and acquires resource material and equipment to support Youth Services programs. (E)
• Administers, coordinates, supervises, and may participate in providing reader’s advisory, reference and referral services through Youth Services. (E)
• Works closely with the Technical Services Manager to approve and evaluate selected library materials, including databases, in all formats for children and teens. (E)
• Selects, sets up, and maintains, in coordination with the Technical Services Manager, the most appropriate materials selection tools.
• Responds to questions/concerns from staff throughout the Library System regarding the juvenile collections.
• Evaluates gift materials for possible addition to the juvenile and/or young adult collection.
• Assists in evaluation of Youth Services materials that are subject to patron requests for reconsideration or that otherwise require reevaluation. (E)
• Works closely with the Collection Development Supervisor, Technical Services Manager, and Adult Services Director on revisions to the Library System’s Collection Development and Maintenance Policy. (E)
• Identifies performers and negotiates contracts with them for library programs. (E)
• Tracks program statistics and provides data for various reports. (E)
• Takes the lead on the system wide Summer Reading program set up, including print materials, program rules, prizes, entertainers, volunteers, room reservations, and instructions for staff. (E)
• Monitors national and community trends, and implements system wide programs for youth that benefit the community.
• Answers questions on library operations, policies and procedures and handles problems and complaints. (E)
• Works with Volunteer Coordinator to promote and facilitate use of volunteers in Youth Services. (E)
• Attends library association meetings, training programs, workshops, and conferences as appropriate.
• Ensures safe work methods are followed to prevent injury. (E)
• Works a schedule that meets the needs of the Library System. (E)
• Performs other related duties as required, including those of any staff member in the unit.
MINIMUM TRAINING & EXPERIENCE
• Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited university.
• Five years of progressive professional library experience at a supervisory level.
• Considerable experience working with children in a library or formal learning environment.
• Certified or eligible for certification by the South Carolina State Library.
Preferred:
• Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood or Elementary Education or related field.
• Experience working with collection development and maintenance.
• Experience in planning library outreach and events for children.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
• Use of personal vehicle with mileage reimbursement
• Valid S.C. driver’s license
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS/ABILITIES & CHARACTERISTICS
(Testing of computer skills may be part of the interview process for this position.)
Knowledge:
• Considerable knowledge of the functions of collection development and maintenance, including general knowledge of the major fields of learning.
• Considerable knowledge of children’s literature and youth developmental stages.
• General knowledge of publisher and vendor practices/methods and reader interest levels.
• Knowledge of problem solving, leadership, and management techniques.
• Knowledge of Human Resources policies, procedures, practices, and Federal and State labor laws.
• Knowledge of library computer systems and applications, online databases, office software, email, and mobile devices.

• Preferred: Bilingual – English/Spanish skills.
