The South Carolina Emergency Management Division (SCEMD), under the South Carolina Military Department, is the primary division of state government that is responsible for coordinating the preparation for, the response to, and the recovery from major disasters in South Carolina. SCEMD also supports local authorities to minimize the loss of life and property from all-hazard events.
Originally developed by the Oregon Department of Emergency Management and the Cascadia Region Earthquake Workgroup, Without Warning!: Central & Eastern U.S. Edition was adapted by the SCEMD for a young South Carolina audience. This action-packed graphic novel follows Angie, a high school student, whose town suffers a major earthquake. Using her emergency preparedness skills, Angie is able to help her family and friends stay safe in the aftermath of the natural disaster. This graphic novel includes information in the back about remaining safe before, during, and after an earthquake and what to include in a basic emergency kit. A map also highlights the five major seismic zones across the Central and Eastern United States, one of which is centered around Charleston.
