The Patriots Point Development Authority was established in the mid-1970s to develop a naval and maritime museum on Charleston Harbor with the main attraction of the museum being the World War II aircraft carrier, the USS Yorktown. In addition to the USS Yorktown, Patriots Point is also the home of the historic warship USS Laffey, the Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum, a Cold War Memorial, and the only Vietnam Support Base Camp in the United States. Patriots Point also serves as the headquarters for the Congressional Medal of Honor Society and the agency’s official Medal of Honor Museum.

The purpose of The Economic Impact of Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum study was to conduct a comprehensive analysis examining both the current economic impact of Patriots Point on the Charleston tri-county region (Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester counties) as well as the long-run increase in this economic impact over time that will likely result from the development of Patriots Annex. The Patriots Annex is the 61 acres of Patriots Point Development Authority property that has been leased for a new mixed-use development that will include a variety of office, retail, vacation, and residential spaces. The Patriots Point Annex project has been undertaken to support the significant costs of maintenance, especially those associated with ship upkeep and repair while also supporting development of the growing Charleston tri-county region.
