2008 Annual South Carolina Library Association Conference – October 22-24
Columbia, SC – Driven by a need to educate librarians about environmental concepts, global climate change, and how to make libraries more “green”, this year’s South Carolina Library Association annual conference theme is “Going Green in Greenville”, and will be held at the Greenville Hyatt October 22-24, 2008. As environmental issues grow, so does the need for education about being greener. Librarians and those interested in libraries from across the state will gather together to learn about environmental research issues and library collections, community outreach, planning issues, working with library volunteers, greening old libraries, recycling materials, and much more.
Keynote speakers at this year’s conference will also discuss a wide variety of green topics. Bryant Terry, eco chef, food justice activist and author of Grub: Ideas for an Urban Organic Kitchen and Organic Soul (forthcoming) will provide the opening address on Wednesday, October 22. On Thursday, October 23, New York Times bestselling author and recent winner of the 2008 South Carolina Center for the Book’s Award for Writing, Mary Alice Monroe, will discuss her books and her involvement in environmental issues. On Friday, October 24, Ben Geer Keys, naturalist, photographer and author of Natural Images of the Southern Appalachians will talk about his artwork and recent book.
Additional concurrent sessions will include topics covering digital collections, services to Spanish speakers, career success, cataloging, children & youth services, college & university services, and much more.
Exhibitors representing book publishers and library service vendors from across the southeast will be in attendance in the exhibit hall. The general public may purchase an exhibits only pass for $10.00. Online registration with PayPal is available at www.scla.org.
Pre-registration deadline for conference attendees is October 17 and hotel reservations must be made by September 30. For those not attending the full conference, tickets are available for Bryant Terry, opening keynote address on Wednesday October 22 at $15.00. Tickets are also available for Mary Alice Monroe, NYT bestselling author on Thursday October 23 and are $40.00 (includes lunch).
