Florence County Public Library Receives Grant to Provide Financial Education

The Florence County Library System has received a $47,949 grant to promote financial literacy in Florence County. The award is made possible by The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) Investor Education Foundation and the American Library Association (ALA), who have announced $1.4 million in grants to 20 recipients as a part of the Smart investing@your library® initiative.

As one of the 20 recipients nationwide and the only library system from South Carolina among this year's awardees, the Florence County Library System will use grant funds to pursue a multigenerational financial literacy strategy in partnership with the South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs, Poynor Adult Education Center and others. The project will reach children, teens, seniors and low-to-moderate income residents to help them become financially savvy and alert them to money scams. Public events begin in September 2011 with a Dewey Dollar Smart Family Fun Fair to be followed over the next nine months by children's programs, an essay contest for teens, as well as workshops for seniors and low-to-moderate income residents at all Florence County Library locations.

Funding for this grant will be administered through the Friends of the Florence County Library, a 501(c)(3) organization.
