New Marion County Library Director Named

The Marion County Library Board of Trustees has named Philip Alan Smith as the new director for Marion County libraries. He replaces library director Salley Berry Davidson who retired June 30 after twenty years of service to the county and its citizens.

Smith comes to Marion from Horry County Library system's Socastee Branch Library. A graduate of the University of South Carolina's College of Library and Information Science, he holds an undergraduate degree from Charleston Southern University and previously served in the Dorchester County Library system.

A resident of Horry County, he has professional experience in technical services, reference, administration, and library technology.

"We were able to attract some very impressive candidates for this position, and we interviewed the top three. Library staff members were especially excited by Mr. Smith's credentials and responses to their interview questions. We are most pleased to welcome Alan to Marion County and our fine library system," library board chair Paul Dove said.
