Tickets are still available for next week's Books 'n Boil, sponsored by the Friends of the Florence County Library.
This year's special guest is Holly Herrick, an acclaimed cookbook author and award-winning food writer who previously served as restaurant critic at Charleston's Post & Courier.
A graduate of Boston College and recipient of Le Grande Diplome in pastry and cuisine from Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, Herrick is a certified chef who puts her palate, creativity and experience to use in manifesting tasty recipes using the freshest produce available.
She has agreed to serve as a judge in a cookoff between chefs chosen by each branch of the library system: Lake City, Pamplico, Timmonsville, Olanta, Johnsonville and Florence.
There also will be a champagne reception, silent auction and live music. Caterers and cooks will prepare appetizers and desserts. Sponsorships start at $500, which include two tickets to all events, as well as recognition for your support. The levels increase in increments all the way up to $5,000, which includes 10 tickets.
Books 'n Boil, the Friends' major annual fundraiser, raised $19,000 last year for all branches of the countywide library system. That money enabled the branches to provide quality reading and educational programs for children and families across Florence County.
Because of the economic downturn, state aid to public libraries, used to purchase books and other materials, has decreased by 57 percent and is projected to decline another 6 percent in the next year.
All branches of the Florence County library system, including the Drs. Bruce & Lee Foundation Library, have pressing needs for books, CDs, DVDs and downloadable online resources to accommodate the growing number of patrons who rely on the many services the library provides.
