State Library Announces New IM Chat Service

OMG! LOL. TTYL. For many adults over the age of 30, the former groupings of letters would seem incoherent, but for a newer generation of technologically-savvy young adults they can say a lot.

Many libraries now offer some kind of instant messaging chat reference service via their web sites so those who prefer to use instant messaging (IM) can now ask a librarian for assistance online.

The State Library has recently introduced their new instant messaging reference service, Ask Leo, which uses the free online chat service Meebo. An embedded "meebo me" widget allows users to "chat" with each other without installing other software or plugins. Ask Leo users can type their questions into the meebo me chat box, and a librarian at the State Library will respond.

Users may instant message a librarian at the State Library for reference assistance during regular agency hours, Monday – Friday from 8:30am – 5:00pm.  Visit www.statelibrary.sc.gov and Ask Leo today!
