Join the fight against illiteracy. Add your name to the Declaration for the Right to Literacy Scroll, which will visit several locations across South Carolina through August 6.
Modeled after the historic Seneca Falls Women's Rights Convention in 1848, this scroll was introduced at the National Literacy Convention in Buffalo, New York in 2009. The scroll is now making its way across the country to gather signatures of those dedicated to reduce illiteracy and will be presented in September to President Barack Obama.
The literacy scroll is part of ongoing local efforts to reduce illiteracy in our state. Another upcoming effort is a Literacy Summit, hosted by a diverse group of reading advocates and practitioners, on Saturday, October 16 at the Richland County Public Library. The summit, funded through a grant from Central Carolina Community Foundation, will bring together various groups to advance reading and literacy in our communities.
"The Literacy Summit and the Declaration for the Right to Literacy Scroll are ways the community can join our cause to reduce illiteracy," said Foundation president & CEO JoAnn Turnquist. "By building awareness and working together, we will develop solutions that help reduce our state's third highest adult illiteracy rate in the country."
