Libraries Helping Job Seekers

The South Carolina State Library is offering training to libraries across the state that will help staff assist job seekers. The training, "Regional Virtual One Stop (VOS) System Training and Workshop for Libraries," shows library staff how to guide a job seeker through the online State's Virtual One Stop (VOS) system including:

• How to use the resume builder and the importance of this tool
• Learning about the many services available for individuals
• Previewing training videos and guides to assist citizens in using VOS
• Experiencing the process that a job seeker will go through
• A training link to allow library staff to practice using the site, along with a Quick Reference Guide to help patrons

In addition to the VOS experience, workshop attendees also become familiar with the process of filing an unemployment insurance claim online. Jason Broughton, State Library Workforce Development Trainer said, "Libraries really wanted to know what a person would need to have before they begin the process of filing a claim online."

Staff members from the SC Department of Employment and Workforce (DEW) have been assisting with the development of the training and handouts that are used in the session. According to Courtney Nowak, Performance & Reporting Manager at DEW, "...we are really excited at the prospect of this outreach and partnership."

According to Broughton, workshops have already been conducted for the Richland, Lexington, and Charleston County Public Libraries. The State Library has also held a workshop and will continue to offer more as needed based on demand. This regional approach included sessions in:

  • Greenville
  • Florence
  • Spartanburg
  • Aiken
  • Anderson
  • Horry
  • Charleston
  • Beaufort
