State Library to Offer New Health Information Class

The State Library's Information Services department is pleased to offer a free health information class for library staff members.

Tuesday, November 29, 1:30 to 3:30 pm

Health and Medical Information: What do we tell the patron? - Remembering that the reference librarian is not a health professional, what can that person do to help the patron asking for medical advice? Where is the information on the web, where in the periodical databases, where in the stacks that librarians can rely on to give accurate, comprehensive data and information, particularly on a lay person's level?

This course will be a quick overview of the databases such as PubMed and Discus -- South Carolina's Virtual Library, and will introduce attendees to a variety of reliable websites and to some print reference resources that are recommended by the Medical Library Association. This session is designed to familiarize the public library staff with resources they can use to help patrons.

This session is also open to general public who are interested in learning more about how to search for reliable health resources. Register online.

Cost: Free. Location: South Carolina State Library, 1500 Senate Street, Columbia. For more information, contact Elaine Sandberg, 803-734-8625 or esandberg@statelibrary.sc.gov.
