JOB TITLE: Director of Spark Space (Maker Lab), Grade 30
LOCATION: Spark Space Department, Headquarters Library
DATE AVAILABLE: June 1st, 2024
SALARY: $58,127 per year (Includes generous benefits package)
HOURS: 40 hours per week Monday through Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm
(Note: Must be flexible to accommodate for schedule changes and community events)
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Master’s Degree in Library Science from an accredited ALA library school with extensive knowledge of makerspaces in public libraries. Must complete pre-employment testing.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Develops objectives and key results for the library makerspace and S.T.E.A.M. education/learning, including maker services.
• Clearly communicates SCPL’s philosophy of S.T.E.A.M. education/learning and maker services to staff.
• Participates in the interview and selection process for Spark Space assistants and instructors.
• Regularly meets with librarians and assistants around the system to provide guidance and help with makerspace programming, equipment, and events.
• Oversees the Spark Space budget and purchasing and prepares reports as needed to evaluate services.
• Builds relationships within the community, attending meetings, and connecting to local services to promote the Spark Space in Spartanburg County.
• Supervises, evaluates, coaches, and trains the Spark Space Instructor and Spark Space Assistants.
• Represents SCPL at conferences and events related to S.T.E.A.M. learning/education and maker services.
• Develops programming and maintains equipment for the S.T.E.A.M mobile lab including collaboration with the Planetarium.
• Stays informed of needs and trends relating to S.T.E.A.M. education/learning and maker services through library patron interactions and reading of current journals, websites and literature to ensure creative and innovative programs that meet the needs of patrons of all ages.
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
• Master’s Degree in Library Science from an accredited ALA library school with extensive knowledge of makerspaces in public libraries
• Extensive ability to troubleshoot technology
• Thorough knowledge of professional library principles and practices, with three years of library experience and some supervisory experience
• Experience in maintaining a budget, keeping track of expenses, and budget planning.
• Forward-thinking, with the drive to set and accomplish long-term goals for the department
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Comfortable and proficient with technology; includes computers, sewing and embroidery machines, 3D printers, Cricut machines, laser cutter, 3D modeling, robotics, resin printing, and various software
• Ability to establish deadlines, monitor progress, and work well with a team
• Strong interpersonal and customer service skills
• Valid driver’s license with the ability to drive to other libraries or community outreach
