Library Director

Library System/Company Name
Wake County Public Libraries (WCPL)
Job Description

Home to the State Capital, Wake County is one of the fastest-growing areas in the nation and the most populous county in North Carolina, with approximately 1,129,410 residents. The County has received national and international rankings and accolades from publications such as Money, Fortune, and Time magazines as one of the best places to live, work and play — and it’s no surprise.

Part of Wake County’s Community Services Department, Wake County Public Libraries (WCPL) is one of the largest and busiest library systems in NC with a service area of over 1.1 million residents. The system operates eight regional libraries, thirteen community libraries, two specialty libraries, and a bookmobile. WCPL has over 400 employees with a total annual budget of $33.9 million. WCPL offers a popular book collection, innovative programs for the entire community, and access to the internet and other digital services. It also provides services to children and adults, promotes recreational reading, encourages lifelong learning, serves as a community center, and bridges the technology gap.

The Library Director is the highest authority in the WCPL and is responsible for developing and implementing policies and procedures to accomplish the goals and objectives of the County, Community Services, and WCPL. This position is also responsible for leading, planning, organizing, maintaining, and directing the facilities and services of the library system. The Director provides vision and strategic direction for WCPL, working closely with the Community Services Director. This work frequently includes local municipalities, County Administration, and the Board of Commissioners. The Library Director is the liaison with library organizations throughout the state, including the State Library of North Carolina.

Wake County offers a salary range of $120,000-$171,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications. The organization is also an award-winning leader in wellness initiatives, offering a competitive benefits package including sign on bonus, relocation allowance, and generous leave program with two weeks of annual leave to start.

Qualifications

Wake County seeks a collaborative, strategic thinker, and excellent communicator to serve as its next Library Director. The ideal candidate will be community- focused, progressive and lead by example. The next Library Director will focus on developing a positive team culture, strategic planning, communicating and managing change, community engagement, and staff development and engagement. The position requires a master’s degree in library science, library and information science, or a related field — an MLS, MLIS, MIS, or ML from an ALA accredited program or NC program — and six years of experience in a library setting with management responsibilities. An equivalent combination of education and experience will not be accepted.
