The Charleston County Public Library Board of Trustees announced today it would conduct a national search for a new director who will lead efforts to build five new libraries and renovate 13 other libraries.

“On Monday, the board regretfully accepted the resignation of our director, Doug Henderson,” said board chair Janet Segal. “His professional and dynamic leadership over the last five years put us in the good place we are in today -- to be able to have a chance to improve library services dramatically in new ways and in new locations. His public service to Charleston County will be greatly missed.”

Henderson, 65, will remain as director until Jan.30, 2016, at which time Deputy Director Cynthia Bledsoe will take over as interim director, Segal said. Starting immediately, the board is launching a national search for a leader to direct the library system as it expands locations and services following passage of a $108.5 million referendum in November 2014.

“My time at the helm of the Charleston County Public Library has been tremendously rewarding and stimulating,” Henderson said. “I’m proud to have led the library and its employees as they prepare for the exciting changes that are ahead in the near future. This is a good time to transition to a new director for the expanding library system."
