Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month!

Celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month with the South Carolina State Library! People of Hispanic heritage have shaped South Carolina from its very beginnings. From Spanish explorers who staked out SC as the northern border of Spain’s Florida territory, to the Gonzales brothers who started the State newspaper, to university professors currently highlighting the diversity of origin and culture of the state’s third largest population, learn how Hispanic South Carolinians add their rich legacies to our past, present, and future.

Explore this year’s theme, “Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together,” through the myriad materials we have about all aspects of Hispanic life in South Carolina and beyond!

September is all about the rich heritage of the Hispanic and Latino people who shape South Carolina from early explorers to current movers and shakers. Read about the Hispanic impact on South Carolina’s history, discover famous South Carolinians who have Hispanic heritage, practice Spanish with your kids with our bilingual story books, and more with our Hispanic Heritage Month Reading List.

Latinos in Libraries, Museums, and Archives: Cultural Competence in Action!

Patricia Montiel-Overall

Written by three experienced LIS professionals, Latinos in Libraries, Museums, and Archives demonstrates the meaning of cultural competence in the everyday work in libraries, archives, museums, and special collections with Latino populations. The authors focus on their areas of expertise including academic, school, public libraries, health sciences, archives, and special collections to show the importance of understanding how cultural competence effects the day-to-day communication, relationship building, and information provision with Latinos. They acknowledge the role of both tacit and explicit knowledge in their work, and discuss ways in which cultural competence is integral to successful delivery of services to, communication with, and relationship building with Latino communities.
