In support of National Poetry Month, the South Carolina State Library is pleased to announce the nine winners in this year's Young Minds Dreaming poetry contest. These outstanding students will be honored at the South Carolina State Library in Columbia at an award ceremony on Saturday, April 21 at 1:30 p.m.

The House Legislative Oversight Committee is currently conducting oversight studies on twelve state agencies. The Committee has scheduled a meeting on Thursday, April 26, for the purpose of receiving comments from the public about three of these agencies. As part of the USC School of Library and Information Science's annual Deans’ and Directors’ Lecture, Lee Rainie, director of internet and technology for Pew Research Center, will visit Columbia on Thursday, April 26. Rainie will discuss how librarians and journalists – as well as other groups dedicated to the advancement of truth – are at a crossroads in America. In particular, he’ll look at the role of librarians and news organizations as the information and social landscape change. Join us at 5:30 p.m.

Public libraries may apply for grants to host public programs around the PBS series “The Great American Read,” an eight-part television and online series designed to spark a national conversation about reading and the books that have inspired, moved, and shaped us, the ALA Public Programs Office announced. 

The South Carolina Digital State Documents Depository provides access to publications produced by state agencies and state-supported academic institutions. These publications provide citizens with crucial information about state government, including statistics, annual accountability reports, and data on a wide variety of topics related to the state.

Bestselling author and American Ballet Theatre Principal Dancer Misty Copeland will lend her support to advocate for our nation’s libraries as honorary chair of National Library Week, April 8 – 14, 2018. Like librarians and library workers, Copeland’s efforts to lead social change through her writing and teaching fuel the transformation of lives through cultural understanding, education and lifelong learning.
