The South Carolina State Library joins libraries in schools, campuses and communities nationwide in celebrating National Library Week, a time to highlight the value of libraries, librarians and library workers.

The SC State Library has partnered with GovLoop to offer a free webinar on May 14 from 2:30 - 3:30 p.m.

The Richland Library Foundation established the Ethel Bolden Minority Scholarship in 2010 in honor and recognition of Mrs. Ethel Bolden's years of service to the Richland County community and its libraries. The $2,500 scholarship will be awarded annually through 2013, and possibly thereafter.

The State Library announces its annual photo contest for SC libraries. Photos may be submitted via Flickr, Facebook or by emailing them to Pamela Hoppock at phoppock@statelibrary.sc.gov.

Registration for the LIBRIS conference is now open. The goal of the LIBRIS conference is to provide an affordable one-day forum for library personnel. This forum will allow attendees to share ideas that will better enable them to carry out the vision and mission of their libraries throughout South Carolina.

National Poetry Month began in 1996 by the Academy of American Poets. It has become a celebration to increase the awareness and appreciation of poetry; schools, publishers, libraries, booksellers, and poets in the Unites States throughout the month celebrate poetry and its vital place in American culture.

The University South Caroliniana Society will hold its 77th annual meeting on Saturday, April 6. A reception will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at South Caroliniana Library on the USC Horseshoe. A luncheon will take place beginning at 1 p.m. at the Capstone House Campus Room.

At the luncheon, Dr. Edna Greene Medford, professor of history and department chair at Howard University, will speak on the Emancipation Proclamation and its meaning to African Americans.

Roberta Bibbins, Director of the Orangeburg County Library, has been named a Mover & Shaker in the library industry by the national publication, Library Journal.

The Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), announces the winners of its Summer Reading Program Grants, which are funded by the Dollar General Literacy Foundation. Twenty libraries across the country are receiving $1,000 to help fund summer reading programs for teens.
