Oconee County Public Library is on the Quilt Trail

The Blue Ridge Arts Council is taking the lead in bringing the National Quilt Trail to South Carolina. The Quilt Trail began in 2001 in Ohio when Donna Sue Groves installed a painted quilt design on her barn to honor her mother, a fifth generation Appalachian quilter. From that simple act, the project has spread to more than 2,000 colorfully painted quilt designs on barns and other structures in twenty-four states.

McCormick County Wins Picturing America Grant to Promote American Art and History

The McCormick County Library will launch a month long program in the fall that aims to draw local citizens into the art and history of America. The program will feature engaging speakers, lively book and film discussions, and the public display of the Picturing America Collection both in the library and at the McCormick Arts Council.

The State Library has recently issued, How S.C. Libraries Stack Up: 2010. This informative handout provides important facts and figures about South Carolina's libraries. It includes recent statistics obtained from the Day in the Life of S.C. Libraries 2010 report, how citizens are using libraries, and much more.

State Library Awards Family-Oriented Grants

The South Carolina State Library has recently awarded sixteen mini-grants for public library to promote reading and serve South Carolina families. The grants were awarded through two projects enabling libraries to increase resources for families reading and learning together, and to encourage families to enjoy spending time at their local community library. Nine county libraries received the AWE Early Literacy Station award: Abbeville, Charleston, Cherokee, Colleton, Dorchester, Fairfield, Kershaw, Oconee, and Union.

State Library Staff Changes

The State Library is pleased to announce that effective July 1, 2010, Denise Lyons has been promoted to the position of Director of Library Development. Denise joined the SC State Library team in September of 2008; she has been responsible for many outstanding projects and programs since arriving. Prior to joining the State Library, Denise was a Communications Coordinator and Assistant Library Manager for the Dallas Public Library system.
