The Richland County Public Library recognized the efforts of its many volunteers at a special event at the Main Library on Thursday, March 18. Special presentations included Adult, Teen and Junior Volunteer of the Year awards, inductions into the RCPL Volunteer Hall of Fame and recognition of The President's Volunteer Service Award recipients.

Denise Lyons is an advocate for family literacy and has just been named a Library Journal Mover & Shaker for 2010. She spearheaded the South Carolina Day by Day Family Literacy Calendar and is reaching families statewide to promote the importance of literacy. The calendar is designed to be a tool that families, caregivers, educators and librarians can use at home and in the classroom to further develop early literacy skills that help young children become prepared for school or do better in school.

The South Carolina State Library is pleased to announce that it is now a BGTIME participating location. BGTIME (Bridging Generations through Technology, Information, Media and Engagement) and the Web site BGTIME.org are made possible through a grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and funding from Central Carolina Community Foundation.

LYRASIS recently announced a collaboration with the South Carolina State Library and Discus, South Carolina's Virtual Library, to provide a customized online collection of current resources for job seekers in the state. The partnership is creating a collection, using the OCLC NetLibrary ® eContent platform, of more than 250 electronic books for career and job seekers.

The South Carolina State Library will announce the selection of the most notable 2009 South Carolina state government documents at a ceremony to be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 16. The selection is announced annually on or near Freedom of Information Day, March 16, the birthday of President James Madison, an early proponent of citizen access to government information.

Author Neil Gaiman, winner of this year's Newbery Medal for "The Graveyard Book," has been named the 2010 Honorary Chair of National Library Week, which will be celebrated April 11-17.
