When the staff at Georgetown County Library noticed that the growing Hispanic population in their county did not often visit the library, they took action. They hired a Hispanic Librarian and started to develop ideas for making the library a more inviting place for that group and for training library staff how to better serve them.

Thanks to a grant from the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) administered by the South Carolina State Library (SCSL), the Cherokee County Public Library is expanding its outreach services to the community. With funding from this grant, the library has purchased a 2015 Ford Transit Connect van which will carry books and other library materials to rural communities, agencies that serve seniors, apartment complexes, and daycare centers.

The Library of Congress Center for the Book is pleased to announce that applications are now being accepted for the 2015 Library of Congress Literacy Awards. These awards are given to outstanding organizations working to promote literacy, both in the United States and worldwide. The awards seek to recognize organizations doing exemplary, innovative and replicable work over a sustained period of time and to encourage new groups, organizations and individuals to become involved. All groups that work to promote literacy are encouraged to apply.

The Richland Library Foundation established the Ethel Bolden Minority Scholarship in 2010 in honor and recognition of Mrs. Ethel Bolden’s years of service to the Richland County community and its libraries. The $2,500 scholarship will be awarded annually through 2017 and possibly thereafter. The scholarship seeks to encourage and provide financial support to students from underrepresented ethnic and racial groups who are working toward the completion of a Master of Library and Information Science degree at the University of South Carolina.

The South Carolina State Library is pleased to offer a new series of five free 30-minute webinars on Legislative Research.  This series of webinars will look at resources to find and track legislation for South Carolina and the U.S. using scstatehouse.gov, congress.gov and FdSys. We’ll also look at resources for locating county and city administrative contacts, and using Discus – South Carolina’s Virtual Library resources to keep up with news.
