Friends of the York County Library Named “Hometown Heroes” by CN2 News

The Friends of the York County Library were recognized by CN2 News, a local cable TV station, as “Hometown Heroes” on February 17 for the tremendous service this group does for York County Libraries.  Filming of the story took place during the set up for the Friends’ winter book sale (video).  As various members were interviewed, volunteers can be seen “behind the scenes” unpacking several hundred boxes of books for the sale.

State Library Announces Fifth Annual StoryfestSC Summer Reading Kick-Off Author Lineup

The South Carolina State Library is proud to announce award-winning authors John Rocco and Anna Dewdney will be featured at StoryfestSC 2015—the state’s summer reading kick-off event. This year’s Collaborative Summer Library slogan is Every Hero Has A Story, celebrating heroes and community heroes.

StoryfestSC exposes families to children’s authors and the art of story, and fosters an excitement for reading, especially throughout the summer. All of South Carolina’s public libraries participate in this coordinated summer reading program.

Thank You to LISSA Volunteers!

This month the University of South Carolina School of Library and Information Science’s student organization LISSA (Library and Information Science Student Association) stopped by on a bright and early Saturday to volunteer in the State Library’s stacks. They assisted with shifting the South Carolina State Documents collection, dusting the stacks, and withdrawing outdated periodical titles. Their help was much appreciated!

“Science Saturdays” at Oconee County Public Library

Once a month, the Youth Services staff at Oconee County Public Library (OCPL) host “Science Saturdays”, a fun but enriching time for hands-on STEAM-related experiments for children during the non-school hours.

With a Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant funded by the Institute for Museum and Library Services and administered by the South Carolina State Library, OCPL engages children ages 4-11 with science and math activities based on curriculum standards while promoting the library’s resources for these subjects. September’s program was all about magnets.
