On Friday May 1, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. at the Township Auditorium, 1703 Taylor Street, Columbia, SC, the Renaissance Foundation will present the Story of the Friendship 9, “No Fear For Freedom, The Musical”.This theatrical presentation is the story of The Friendship 9, a group of young students from Rock Hill, South Carolina, who went to jail after staging a sit-in at a segregated McCrory’s lunch counter in 1961. The theatrical event is in honor of former Chief Justice of the South Carolina Supreme Court, Ernest A.

Center Announces 2014-2015 Letters About Literature Winners

The South Carolina Center for the Book is pleased to announce the nine winners in this year’s Letters About Literature contest.  These outstanding students will be honored at the South Carolina State Library in Columbia at an award ceremony on Wednesday, April 29 at 10:30 a.m.  Contest judges and South Carolina State Library Foundation members will be on hand to welcome attendees and present awards.

Amir Karami joins the faculty of the School of Library and Information Science at the University of South Carolina

Mr. Amir Karami is finishing his PhD at University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) in May 2015.  He will be joining the USC SLIS faculty in Fall 2015.  Currently, he works at the Maryland DINAMIC Lab and also as an instructor at the UMBC Information Systems Department.  He was a Data Science Consultant for a start-up company in Washington D.C.

Call for Conference Program Proposals

The South Carolina Library Association is seeking program proposals for the 2015 Annual Conference that will be held in Columbia, SC on October 21-23 at the downtown Marriott. We encourage submissions from library professionals covering a wide range of topics that appeal to those who work in public, academic, school, and special libraries as well as those who work with groups that support libraries.  This year’s theme is "100 Years in the Making" in celebration of SCLA’s 100th anniversary.

State Library Announces 2015 Literary Cake Decorating Contest Winners

To celebrate National Library Week (April 12-18, 2015), the South Carolina State Library hosted a literary cake decorating contest. Participants submited cakes decorated to represent a character from a favorite book, a favorite children’s book cover, or anything else book-related.

Cakes were dropped off at the State Library between 8:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. on Friday, April 17, 2015. Library visitors voted for their favorite cake any time between 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. After winners were announced, the cakes were cut and enjoyed by all!

York County Library celebrates National Bookmobile Day with Open House

Celebrate National Bookmobile Day and get a look inside the York County Library Bookmobile on Thursday, April 16 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. and 2 – 6 p.m. at the York County Library in Rock Hill.  Learn about the bookmobile and the outreach services provided throughout York County.  Receive an official Bookmobile Day sticker, a sweet treat, and a make and take papercraft bookmobile.
