The U.S. Government Publishing Office (GPO) has released the Mobile Member Guide app for the 114th Congress. The mobile Web app provides the public with quick, easy access to information on Members of the 114th Congress; the features include their picture, party affiliation, hometown, home state, and length of service. The app allows users to browse for Members of Congress by last name, state, chamber, or party. The public can take advantage of this free mobile Web app on major mobile device platforms.

Associate Professor Shannon Jones has recently been named the MUSC Library's new director effective July 1, 2015.  Jones joined the MUSC Library in January 2014 as Assistant Director for Program Development and Resource Integration, and Associate Professor in the Department of Library and Information Science.  She has over 13 years' experience working in academic research and health science libraries including 8 years in management and administration.  Prior to MUSC, Jones was the Associate Director for Research and Education at the Tomkins-McCaw Library for the Health Scienc

The South Carolina State Library’s Center for the Book has selected Amelia Bedelia, by Peggy Parrish (HarperCollins Publishers), to represent South Carolina at the 2015 National Book Festival in Washington, D.C.  The book is the state’s selection for the National Book Festival’s Discover Great Places Through Reading map.  Each state selects one title of fiction or non-fiction, a book about the state or by an author from the state that is a good read for children or young adults.

The Berkeley County Library System, with assistance from Google, is pleased to be the first library system in the state to offer a new service, MiFi30, which allows customers to check out the internet for 30 days, free with their library card. This new service began with a grant over $11k from Google to the Friends of the Berkeley County Library. The grant helps support ongoing efforts to put Google’s technical know-how and resources to work for the communities where they live and work.

The staff of South Carolina State Library were deeply saddened to learn of the loss of Cynthia Hurd, Charleston County Public Library’s St. Andrews Regional Library Manager, in the shootings Wednesday night at Mother Emmanuel AME Church in downtown Charleston. Cynthia was a tireless servant of the community who spent her life helping residents, making sure they had every opportunity for an education and personal growth. To honor Cynthia and all those lost in last night's shooting, the Charleston County Public Library's 16 locations are closed today, Thursday, June 18, 2015.

Joe Ryan, Education Coordinator with the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force at the South Carolina Attorney General’s Office is providing a new free service to the state’s public libraries. 

Each year, libraries across the United States invite teens to a locally hosted lock-in on the same night during August for online visits with well-known authors, fun contests, popular crafts, and multi-player games. While each event is sponsored by the participating library, librarians share ideas and expertise to coordinate events that bring teens together across time zones and geographic boundaries.

The 2015 National Teen Library Lock-in will be held Friday, July 31st!

The BARD Mobile app for Android devices, version 1.0, is now available at the Google Play store, at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=gov.loc.nls.dtb. The BARD Mobile app enables NLS patrons to download audiobooks and audio magazines directly to their Android devices, provided they have BARD accounts and are using devices running Android OS 4.1 or later. A BARD Mobile app for iOS devices was released in 2013.
