It is with great sadness that we share news of Michael G. Simmons's death. Mr. Simmons served on the State Library Board from June 2011 until he passed away on September 22, 2019. State Library Director Leesa Aiken described Mr. Simmons as a tremendous advocate for libraries and an encouraging member of our Board. We are grateful for the time and energy that he devoted to our agency. He will be deeply missed.

Join the entire book community and celebrate the freedom to read during Banned Books Week. During September 22-28, 2019, members of the book community will unite to highlight the value of free and open access to information. The movement was originally sparked by a surge in the number of challenges to books in schools, libraries, and bookstores during the early 1980s.

The South Carolina Digital State Documents Depository provides access to publications produced by state agencies and state-supported academic institutions. These publications provide citizens with crucial information about state government, including statistics, annual accountability reports, and data on a wide variety of topics related to the state.

The South Carolina State Library is pleased to welcome author/illustrator Lizzy Rockwell to the Irmo Branch of the Lexington County Public Library from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. on September 25. Rockwell is the illustrator of more than 25 children’s books by a variety of authors including her mother, Ann Rockwell. She is the author/illustrator of Plants Feed Me, Good Enough to Eat: A Kid’s Guide to Food and Nutrition, Hello Baby!
