State Library hosts Freedom Now exhibit through March 29, 2019
In honor of Black History Month, we are excited to partner with Columbia SC 63 and host "Freedom Now." Beginning February 8, we will showcase images taken during the height of the civil rights movement. Many of the images are undocumented, presenting a unique opportunity to the public. We invite you to visit the State Library and to help us identify the people in the photos and the dates they were taken. The exhibition is a significant part of our state's history and on display until March 29.
Literary Cake Decorating Contest Announced
To celebrate National Banned Books Week (September 23–29), the South Carolina State Library is hosting our annual Literary Cake Decorating Contest. This year, our contest is only for SC high school students enrolled in their school's Culinary Arts Program. The contest is an excellent opportunity to demonstrate baking skills and creativity. Plus, the prizes are fantastic!

The South Carolina State Library is committed to preserving the Rare Book Collection (promotional video) and making them accessible to the community. The collection includes approximately 2,000 items, ranging from political speeches and periodicals to historical scientific works and literature. Half of the Rare Book collection comes from the personal library of A.S.
State Library Announces 2018 Young Minds Dreaming Poetry Contest Winners
In support of National Poetry Month, the South Carolina State Library is pleased to announce the nine winners in this year's Young Minds Dreaming poetry contest. These outstanding students will be honored at the South Carolina State Library in Columbia at an award ceremony on Saturday, April 21 at 1:30 p.m.
Free workshop - South Carolina genealogy: exploring online resources
The SC State Library is pleased to offer a workshop titled “South Carolina Genealogy: exploring online resources” taught by Debbie Bloom, Manager of the Walker Local and Family History Center at the Richland Library on May 9, 2018, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Attendees will explore databases, indexes, and digital content that South Carolina libraries and other public institutions are offering researchers. All are welcome to attend.
State Library to host Lemira Elementary Percussion Ensemble
Please join us for a free, live concert as we welcome the Lemira Elementary Percussion Ensemble to the SC State Library on Friday, December 8 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. The State Library is honored to host this enthusiastic and talented group of students from Lemira Elementary School in Sumter, SC. This is a free event and open to the public.
Register for Tech Tuesday: Digital Photography and Editing Basics - November 14
Register today for our upcoming Tech Tuesday. Attendees will learn the basics about using a digital camera, settings, image framing and composition, as well as how to use free online image editing tools. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own digital cameras. There will be time for Q&A. Tech Tuesday is a free learning session and open to the general public.
