National Best-Selling Author Terry McMillian Will Headline 3rd annual Charleston African American Book Festival

One of America’s most beloved and critically-acclaimed authors, Terry McMillan, will be the featured speaker at this year’s Black Ink Book Festival. McMillian became the empowering voice of a generation of women with her New York Times #1 bestsellers Waiting to Exhale and How Stella Got Her Groove Back.   She will join 60 black authors and hundreds of readers for the third annual festival on Saturday, September 8, 2018, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Main branch of the Charleston County Public Library, 68 Calhoun St.

Carmen Agra Deedy - Crafting a Story

Award-winning author Carmen Agra Deedy was featured at the South Carolina State Library's StoryfestSC 2018 in Columbia, SC. She took time out to explain the process of crafting a story. Carmen has been writing for children for over two decades. Born in Havana, Cuba, she came to the U.S. as a refugee in 1964. Kwame Alexander - Writing Poetry

New York Times Bestselling author Kwame Alexander was the speaker at the South Carolina State Library's 2018 Young Minds Dreaming Contest.  Winners received a signed copy of his book, Out of Wonder. He is the author of 28 books, including Swing, Solo, and REBOUND, the follow-up to his, Newbery-medal winning middle grade novel, THE CROSSOVER. After the ceremony, Kwame sat down with Knowitall to discuss poetry and the art of writing poetry.
