Ethel Bolden Minority Scholarship Application Now Available

The Richland Library Friends and Foundation continues to award the Ethel Bolden Minority Scholarship which was established in 2010 in honor and recognition of Mrs. Ethel Bolden’s years of service to the Richland County community and its libraries. The $3,500 scholarship seeks to encourage and provide financial support to students from underrepresented ethnic and racial groups who are working toward the completion of a Master of Library and Information Science degree at the University of South Carolina.

Center Announces 2017-2018 Letters About Literature Winners

The South Carolina Center for the Book is pleased to announce the nine winners in this year’s Letters About Literature contest.  These outstanding students will be honored at the South Carolina State Library in Columbia at an award ceremony on Wednesday, May 23, 2018 at 3:00 p.m.  Contest judges and South Carolina State Library Foundation members will be on hand to welcome attendees and present awards.

State Library Shares Day by Day Family Literacy Activity Calendar Project

Libraries are essential to Family Literacy. In South Carolina, libraries bridge the gap for those who may not have access to resources for a variety of reasons. In order to assist family literacy efforts across South Carolina, the South Carolina State Library launched the South Carolina Day by Day Family Literacy Activity calendar project, a perpetual print calendar with a monthly theme that encompasses books, songs, activities, health information, and family wellness information.

State Library to host Quarterly Government Social Media Idea Exchange

Join us for our quarterly exchange of ideas on Friday July 20, 2018 from 10am to noon! We'll hear from Sam Tyson, Social Media Manager at the Charleston County Public Library, who will discuss how he manages the library's social media outlets. We'll also hear from Kim McLeod, Public Information Coordinator for SCEMD, about the 2018 Government Social Media Conference & Expo (GSMCON). We also want to hear from you!

Book Talk: All for Civil Rights: African American Lawyers in South Carolina, 1868-1968

Join us on Thursday, May 24, from noon to 1:00 p.m. for this month's author talk and book signing: All for Civil Rights: African American Lawyers in South Carolina, 1868-1968, by William Lewis Burke, Jr. This is the first book-length study devoted to black lawyers’ struggles and achievements in the state that had the largest black population in the country, by percentage, until 1930―and that was a majority black state through 1920.
